SCEWC

The Smart Cities Expo World Congress (SCEWC) aims to bring together partners, initiatives and projects funded by the European Commission which have the common goal of exploring sustainable urban solutions, accelerating the European Green Deal and the RePowerEu at the local level.

The SCEWC 2024 took place from 5 - 7 November in Barcelona, Spain. This is the second year in which BUILDSPACE attends this relevant global event for cities and urban innovation.

BUILDSPACE Takes the Stage: Shaping the Future of Cities

In this year’s agenda, BUILDSPACE took part in two different sessions, namely the Agora and Booth sessions. On 5 November, it was represented by Dr. Stamatia Rizou, R&D Manager at SingularLogic, in the session on “Digitalisation for a Sustainable and Resilient Future for Cities”, in which panelists highlighted key European policies and discussed digital solutions like digital twins, city services, and smart connectivity infrastructure. In this regard, the motivations behind BUILDSPACE were introduced. Cities are becoming increasingly vulnerable to natural hazards and impact of climate change, so BUILDSPACE addresses the need for robust digital infrastructure to collect and analyse data at large scale, the demand for evidence-based decision-support, and the fact that data-informed decision-making and digital upgrading can help increase operational efficiencies at low cost.

The following day, on 6 November, BUILDSPACE was presented by SingularLogic in the “EU Space for Sustainable Urban Future” session, which focused on how space earth observation data and services can be used to deliver innovative services for smart cities. The project coordinator provided some interesting insights from BUILDSPACE in order to demonstrate the capabilities of its platform and services at building and city level in supporting energy-efficient buildings and climate-resilient cities. BUILDSPACE aims to align and synchronise with Copernicus and EGNSS to ensure that the project utilises the most appropriate data sources.

The panel discussion also included a presentation from the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) about the current practices and trends in the use of space data to unlock a wide range of applications in urban environments.

BUILDSPACE: A Game-Changer for Sustainable Urban Development

BUILDSPACE’s participation in this type of international event serves as recognition of its potential to shape and revolutionise the building and urban sector. Unlike existing projects, BUILDSPACE offers a comprehensive solution that combines building-level and city-level analysis, along with a suite of five unique services within its core platform. This integrated approach empowers policymakers with valuable insights into future scenarios, supporting data-driven strategies for the development of sustainable and climate-resilient cities.
