As climate change accelerates and cities seek sustainable solutions, BUILDSPACE is leading the way by equipping urban planners, policymakers, and developers with digital tools to better anticipate and respond to environmental challenges.
Between May and July 2025 a series of targeted training sessions and live demonstrations was held, each one highlighting a different aspect of the BUILDSPACE platform and its real-world application.
Here’s a look at three recent BUILDSPACE events that exemplify its mission to bridge cutting-edge innovation with real-world application:
BUILDSPACE for Flood Resilience: Predict, Plan, Protect

The first of the three events took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and focused on Service 5 (SE5), a tool developed to analyse and predict urban flood risks. It began with a training session on May 21st, where participants were introduced to SE5’s capabilities, from interactive flood maps to blue-green infrastructure planning.
This was followed by an in-person demonstration on June 5th in Ljubljana, where attendees were able to test the tool for themselves. They explored real flood scenarios, evaluated possible damage, and assessed strategies for climate adaptation. The event underlined how powerful these tools can be when put directly into the hands of local stakeholders. It was a vivid example of BUILDSPACE’s goal: transforming complex data into practical solutions for cities facing increasing flood risks.
Smart Tools for Urban Heat Challenges in Piraeus
On June 3rd, BUILDSPACE held a training and demonstration event in Piraeus, Greece, focused on urban heat resilience. With temperatures rising year after year, managing urban heat has become a top priority for southern European cities.
This session spotlighted Service 4 (SE4), which combines environmental and social data to map urban heat risk and vulnerability. Participants, both online and on-site at Piraeus City Hall, learned how to use SE4 to identify hotspots, estimate future energy demands, and develop strategies like urban greening and passive cooling.Presentations by the local municipality and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid highlighted the importance of evidence-based planning. A live demonstration showed the tool in action, offering both technical insight and practical guidance.
Digital Twins generation and enrichment in BUILDSPACE Pilots

On July 25th, BUILDSPACE hosted a fully online event that explored how cities can use digital twins to improve energy efficiency and construction monitoring. The session focused on Service 1 (SE1) and Service 2 (SE2), which are being piloted at two buildings in Poland: the University of Warsaw and the Poznań University of Technology.
Participants learned how drones, Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), and thermal imaging are being used to create and enrich digital models of buildings. These tools allow cities to detect heat loss, track construction progress, and ensure that new infrastructure meets high energy performance standards.
The live demo gave attendees a chance to see how the system works, from data collection to analysis. It was a compelling example of how digital innovation can support climate goals while reducing long-term operational costs.
Empowering Cities Through Innovation
Each of these events showcased a different facet of the BUILDSPACE platform, but all shared the same purpose: helping cities turn data into action. By offering a mix of online, in-person, and hybrid formats, the project ensured wide participation and real impact across European cities.
